The Buddha explored the human condition through nama-rupa, the mind-body conglomerate. He understood the body to be a microcosm of the universe. By exploring the reality of one's own body, the Buddha felt that one could understand the fundamental laws of the universe. In his teaching, the Buddha emphasized that the body was fluid, dynamic, and constantly changing. The Buddha also understood that creating a different set of expectations and perspectives—in effect, a sense of wonder about it all—will go a long way toward alleviating the suffering inherent in a constantly changing body and universe. This program will focus on modern scientific knowledge about how a body is created out of the universe through cause and effect, and will discuss how such a complex phenomena as a body is maintained, as well as how and why it decays. We will be bringing the precision of the scientist and the sensibility of the poet to reflect on the issues of dukkha of the body and the universe, and a sense of wonder with which to live in the world. This program will be based upon Paul’s book, Wonder: When and Why the World Appears Radiant, which is recommended reading. The day will consist of a series of presentations based upon the book, each of which will be followed by group discussion.
