Right Speech: Words that Lead to Awakening

Program Description:

This weekend we will explore the Buddha’s teachings on Wise Speech, a powerful vehicle for bringing the Dharma fully into our daily lives. We will study and discuss select passages from the suttas, then practice this material in interactive exercises that also draw upon the contemporary discipline of Nonviolent Communication. We will give particular emphasis to understanding Wise Speech as an integral part of the Eight-Fold Path, as well as developing practical tools for integrating speech practice into our daily lives. Interactive sessions will alternate with periods of silent mindfulness and kindness meditation. Participants are requested to have experience or training with vipassanā or secular mindfulness practice.

  Oren Jay Sofer

  Oren Jay Sofer has practiced meditation in the Theravada Buddhist tradition since 1997. He holds a degree in Comparative Religion from Columbia University, is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner for healing trauma, is a Certified Nonviolent Communication Trainer, and is a Spirit Rock Teachers’ Council member. Oren is the Founder of Next Step Dharma and author of several books including, Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication and the forthcoming title, Your Heart Was Made for This.
