Course Description:
How might we expand our contexts of care in ways that meet the needs of others and support our own lives as chaplains? We will explore responses to this question together in this retreat for Buddhist chaplains and others who do some form of chaplaincy work. Drawing on multiple sources–especially Buddhist traditions and Internal Family Systems (IFS)–we will inquire into self, no self, ego and no ego, selfing and narcissism to reimagine what it is to be a human being We will reimagine who we are as persons so that we can serve others in ways that are more supportive of who they are while also caring for ourselves.
In this retreat, we will engage two texts–Richard Schwartz’s No Bad Parts and Pamela Ayo Yetunde’s Casting Indra’s Net–as we cultivate ways of expanding our understanding of who we are and the contexts in which we serve others.
In order to create a diverse student body, at least 1/3 of the spaces will be held for BIPOC participants until two months before the course opening.
