Cultivating the Jhāna Factors

This online program in collaboration with Shaila Catherine's Bodhi Courses will focus on cultivation of the five jhāna factors — directed attention, sustained attention, joy, happiness, and one-pointed attention. These factors develop in the natural course of concentration. The jhāna factors overpower hindrances, develop powerful mental skills, strengthen the stability of mind, and enhance deep happiness as the mind prepares for jhāna absorption. This course is suitable for students with previous mindfulness-based meditation experience.

What to expect:

This online course includes seven learning modules with:

• recorded lectures

• reading assignments

• sutta study

• guided meditations

• peer led discussion forums

• optional live conferences with Shaila Catherine

Daily meditation practice is strongly encouraged. Optional live conference calls are scheduled at various times to accommodate students in different time zones.

Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm and Clarity by Shaila Catherine (Wisdom Publications, 2008) is required for this course. Wisdom Wide and Deep: A Practical Handbook for Mastering Jhāna and Vipassanā, also by Shaila Catherine (Wisdom Publications,2011), is recommended.

Newcomers to Bodhi Courses are welcome to join this Jhāna Factors course, and it will serve as a prerequisite for the later topics in the Concentration Series that stipulate a prerequisite of previous participation.

Online Course: This course will be hosted on the Zoom video conferencing platform and closed captions are available. 

Our intention is to build sangha and provide meaningful virtual interactions with each other and with teachers in our online programs. The live sessions provide an opportunity to connect with the teacher and other participants and this course can still be a rich learning experience if you are unable to participate in the Sunday Zoom sessions. The sessions will be recorded and made available to participants in the class. The schedule of the course (shown in US Eastern Time) is as follows:

  • Shaila Catherine is the founder of Bodhi Courses, an online Dhamma classroom, and Insight Meditation South Bay, a Buddhist meditation center in Silicon Valley. She authored two books on concentration and insight—Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm, and Clarity, and Wisdom Wide and Deep: A Practical Handbook for Mastering Jhana and Vipassana. She began practicing meditation in 1980 and has dedicated more than nine years to silent retreats. Shaila has been teaching meditation internationally since 1996.
