The Path Becomes More Accessible: A New Electric Utility Vehicle at BCBS

This spring, the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies welcomed a new fully electric utility vehicle to campus, supporting ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and care for the environment.

As our community grows and changes, we are becoming more aware of the different mobility needs practitioners may have while on retreat. The utility vehicle offers an additional way to support accessibility on campus and help ensure that mobility is not a barrier to participating in the life of BCBS.

In a recent letter to the community, Melissa shared that BCBS has set an intention for 2026 “to do everything we can to make all that BCBS offers—study, practice, and community—accessible to everyone while minimizing our impact on the planet.” She described accessibility as ongoing work that includes reviewing both the physical campus and online spaces for mobility, vision, hearing, and neurodiversity access.

The new utility vehicle is one small part of that broader effort. It will help staff respond more easily to accessibility needs around campus while also supporting day-to-day operations in a quieter and more environmentally sustainable way.

Because the utility vehicle is fully electric, it also reflects BCBS’s ongoing commitment to environmental practices. Care for the earth is deeply connected to Buddhist practice, and BCBS continues to explore practical ways to care for the environment through energy efficiency, mindful resource use, and sustainability initiatives across campus.

In Buddhism, compassion is expressed not only through teachings and insight, but also through care for the practical conditions that support practice and community. Sometimes that care appears in something very ordinary: helping make the path a little more accessible for someone else.

As BCBS continues working toward greater accessibility and sustainability, we remain grateful for the many ways this community helps support our aspiration to be a spiritual home and resource for all.
