Dharma Resource: Friendship, the Whole of Life Well-lived
by Janet Surrey and Charles Hallisey
As a Buddhist study center, we’re committed to ongoing inquiry. Each newsletter includes a Dharma Resource to support continued learning and reflection. We hope they are helpful to you in your study and practice.

At BCBS, we understand study, practice, and community as deeply interconnected. In this Insight Journal article, Jan Surrey and Charles Hallisey explore the central role of friendship on the Buddhist path, reflecting on the Buddha’s teaching that spiritual friendship is not half of the good life, but the whole of it. Drawing on texts, stories, and lived experience, they invite us to consider how our relationships shape the path and what it means to live and practice well together.
As we continue to explore what community asks of us, this reflection offers a meaningful place for inquiry.
