Finding Community at BCBS
By Janet Clemons
I have dabbled in Buddhism since the late 1980s, at times as a member of a local sangha in Maine and attending retreats in New Hampshire. I did much of my Buddhist study on my own, with the Buddha and the Dharma. It wasn’t until I visited BCBS in 2021 that I realized the importance of having a place that brings together study, practice, and relationship. The integration of Sangha into my life began through the program I was engaged in at the time, and it has continued to grow because of the overall environment of BCBS.
I remain in close contact with many folks from the program. With the support of BCBS and William Edelglass, in particular, the Sangha formed there continues to gather annually at BCBS. We have self-organized retreats at different facilities and online. Some of us meditate together online every morning. My practice has deepened as a result. I am taking a deeper dive into the Buddha’s teachings and now consider myself to be a Buddhist, rather than someone who merely dabbles in Buddhism.
The in-person retreats I have attended have been incredibly well organized and have allowed ample time to study with teacher(s), reflect on the teachings, take long walks, explore the grounds, enjoy the vast library or nap, and interact with other Buddhist practitioners. The online retreats have been well balanced, with a mix of meditation, teachings, breakout groups, and Q&A.
From the moment I first arrived at BCBS on that bright autumn afternoon in November 2021, I have felt a very strong connection. The staff are always welcoming and available to answer any questions. The kitchen staff provides wonderful meals and welcomes me as I perform my yogi job. I have stayed in different rooms in the Dharma Hall, in rooms both upstairs and downstairs at the Farmhouse, and one time was lucky enough to be assigned a lovely cabin. I always know that whatever space I am assigned, I will be safe and comfortable. Each time I return to BCBS, I feel welcomed, respected, and appreciated for who I am. With all that is going on in the world these days, BCBS offers a safe harbor for connection within a community that is greatly needed.
