Joanna Macy (May 2, 1929 — July 19, 2025)
Joanna Macy, Ph.D., was a scholar of Buddhism, systems thinking, and deep ecology, as well as a beloved teacher and author. As the root teacher of the Work That Reconnects, she created a groundbreaking framework for personal and social transformation, offering a vision of the world as our larger body.
Her many books include World as Lover, World as Self; Widening Circles: A Memoir; Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re In Without Going Crazy; and Coming Back to Life: The Updated Guide to the Work That Reconnects. Her life and teachings are also celebrated in A Wild Love for the World: Joanna Macy and the Work of Our Times (ed. Stephanie Kaza).
Joanna’s wisdom, courage, and vision inspired generations of seekers and activists around the world. Her teachings continue to ripple outward, calling us to meet the suffering of our times with resilience, hope, and love.
