Awakening Together: An Insight Dialogue Retreat For People of Color

Assistant Teacher: Yenkuei Chuang

There is an African Proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Together, we are stronger and more resilient, and we can support one another to go a little bit further on the path towards awakening. This program is about just that: supporting each other to awaken together.

Insight Dialogue is Vipassana meditation practiced in relationship. It weaves together the meditative qualities of wise view, wise effort, wise mindfulness, and wise concentration with the wisdom of the Buddha Dhamma and the voice of another. We will integrate the wisdom practice of Insight Dialogue with the Brahmaviharas, the four limitless heart qualities to which we all have access.

Together, we will practice recognizing the responsiveness of the heart as a natural aspect of our interpersonal relationships. We will cultivate the recognition of the heart’s response through the practice of quieting the mind together.

During this program, we will cultivate embodied presence, inner strength, and the strength of interdependence. We will open to the multilayered, co-created moment, and learn to stand with equanimity in a tumultuous world.

Program Format: This retreat will include dharma talks, guided meditation, silent meditation, guided relational practices, and opportunities to ask the teachers questions about the meditative process.

Transportation Assistance:

In an effort to make our campus more accessible, we will share a ride-share sheet specifically for this program. We will also provide a single van shuttle ride to and from BCBS on opening and closing days (from Boston South Station to BCBS and from BCBS to Boston South Station) for those who are unable to find a ride using the ride-share boards. The page and van pickup information will be shared with you upon registration.

Noble silence will be observed during much of this program. Some contemplative exercises may involve mindful speaking and listening. Noble silence is to be upheld at all other times.
