The Buddha’s instructions on mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati) guide the meditator through calming the body, calming the mind, investigating and accepting the way things are in the moment, and reflecting on the truths that lead to complete liberation from suffering.
In this retreat, we will study the Ānāpānasati Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya 118) for application and inspiration. We will develop our understanding and dexterity with the sixteen ānāpānasati instructions, which constitute the most detailed meditation guidance offered by the Buddha. As we strengthen our skills, we will emphasize the final four instructions for developing wisdom and opening to insight that leads directly to awakening.
This retreat will have some monastic influence, such as the opportunity to keep eight precepts and participate in daily chanting. The teachings will be grounded in Early Buddhist Texts and are particularly informed by the Thai Forest Tradition. Elements of the Buddha’s teachings that are sometimes found to be challenging, such as karma, rebirth, and the goal of liberation, will also be explored.
Program Format: There will be Dhamma talks, guided meditation, silent meditation, lecture presentations, Q&R, small group practice discussions and a small amount of chanting.
