Samadhi–bringing joy and catalyzing awakening–is at the heart of the Buddhist path. It may be described as collectedness, cohesion, calm, aliveness, and the delight that arises from meditative sensitivity.
In this retreat, we will explore and develop samadhi through approaches inspired by the late Dharma teacher Rob Burbea. Emphasis will be placed on cultivating skill, sensitivity, attunement, and subtle discernment—inviting the heart and body to taste the joy that can arise from refined perception.
To support this deepening, we will begin with a foundation of metta or breath-based meditation. From there, we’ll gently meet and work with both obvious and subtle hindrances that may arise, tending naturally in the direction of jhana.
This retreat will be based on the last retreat Rob Burbea taught, titled “Practicing the Jhanas.” You are more than welcome to listen to some of the recordings from that retreat — they can help you get a sense of whether this program is right for you and support you in attuning yourself to its spirit.
Note: The retreat will be led by a teacher trained by Rob Burbea to teach the approaches and conceptual frameworks he articulated for practicing the jhanas.
Program Format: The balance of silence and instruction on this retreat will be somewhat similar to that of an insight meditation retreat, with most of the day dedicated to silent practice of sitting and walking, supported by instructions, guided meditations, and Dharma talks.
