Looking at the faces and the scenes that are depicted in Buddhist art, you might recognize your own practice. The emotions, the insights, the struggle, the relief are all portrayed there. This program will invite participants to engage with a variety of Buddhist artistic expressions, in visual and tactile ways, and to reflect on how these portrayals relate to what they have experienced on the Path. We will also consider the role of aspiration and ways in which Buddhist art might inspire our practice and lead to new experiences. Participants will be invited to create art, sharpening their visual skills and experiencing ancient Buddhist art nonverbally through drawing or painting. Participants will also be invited to practice meditation, contemplate the art in silence, and reflect with others.
Program Format: The program will consist of a guided sitting and silent walking meditation in the morning. Then, Dhammadīpā will offer a lecture in the classroom after lunch, followed by a period in which participants will draw or paint an artifact from a photo or one that is in the room. After dinner, the day will end with a “sharing circle” and a final period of silent sitting meditation. Participants can speak freely from lunch until the end of dinner.
