Wisdom Wide and Deep: Systematic Practices for Developing Jhāna and Vipassana

The fifth century text known as The Path of Purification (Visuddhimagga) has had a significant influence on the development of Theravada practices. Structured as a sequential training in virtue (sila), mental development (samadhi) and discernment (panna), this classic manual guides meditators out of the tangled mass of ignorance to direct realization through insight knowledge. The Visuddhimagga continues to serve as a vital resource for many contemporary practitioners. It inspired the deep meditative training of jhāna and vipassanā that Shaila Catherine describes in the book, Wisdom Wide and Deep. It offers a systematic approach to practice that can help contemporary meditators realize the liberating potential of the path.

We will use Wisdom Wide and Deep, by Shaila Catherine, as the study text for this study retreat. Please acquire a printed or e-book version of Wisdom Wide and Deep and bring it to the retreat. Reading assignments from Wisdom Wide and Deep will be assigned prior to and during the retreat.
