Right Concentration: Exploring Samadhi, Samatha, Vipassana, and Jhanas

Right Concentration (samma samādhi) is one of the factors on the Eightfold Path. Today, there is much discussion of the nature and role of samādhi on the Buddhist path. There is also considerable debate regarding deep states of absorption and their place in Theravada practice. In this program we will explore the different levels, characteristics, and contexts in which this important factor of the path (samma samadhi) is cultivated.

This presentation will include both the study and practice of samādhi. There will be theoretical presentations on the role and purpose of samādhi. We will also explore the nuances of applying concentration in a pure śamathā or vipassanā framework as well as in the simultaneous arising of both together. There will also be explicit teaching on skillful approaches to implementing concentration in our own meditation. Thus, we will take a broad perspective on concentration practice, including the jhanas, in both theory and practice.

Program Format: This program will include presentations, dharma talks, guided meditation, silent meditation, and small group discussions.

Noble Silence:

This program includes dedicated periods of both wise speech and noble silence. In addition to some contemplative exercises involving mindful speaking and listening, there will be periods when participants are able to speak freely.

Experience Level:

Suitable for beginning and experienced practitioners.
