Within Tibetan Buddhism, Tantra, or Vajrayana, is considered the culmination of a gradual training in Buddhist thought and practice. A rich and complex tradition, Vajrayana works with the subtle energies of the body as a means of actualizing a non-dual awareness that is inseparable from compassionate activity.
If we use a plant as a metaphor, ethics and mindfulness are the roots, compassion and altruistic intention are the flowers, and the energy body is the life force that sustains the plant. The stronger the life force, the more stable the roots and more fragrant the flower.
In this program, we will explore three main topics. First, we will look at the history of Buddhist Tantra, tracing what we know of its origins in India to its evolution in Tibet. Second, we will unpack and practice Tibetan compassion meditations that are considered indispensable training for Buddhist Tantra. Third, we will explore safe, accessible ways to work with the energy body. These gentle practices can help complement any Buddhist or non-Buddhist spiritual practice that you might already have.
Program Format: This program will balance intellectual learning with dharma talks and guided meditation. Participants will be guided in compassion practices, simple mantra, and gentle yogic breathing that they can confidently incorporate into a home practice.
