A Wild Love for the World: Joanna Macy’s Contributions to Contemporary Buddhism

“The most radical thing any of us can do at this time is to be fully present to what is happening in the world.”

– Joanna Macy

Joanna Macy (1929-2025) was an open-hearted, creative, luminous being, with deep love and fellow feeling for people and all beings in their diverse lives. Joanna was one of the earliest and most prominent Western figures to articulate an engaged Buddhism attentive to environmental and social systems. Her contributions as a teacher, guide, environmental activist, and scholar are rooted in the classical Buddhist principles of dependent arising and compassion and integrating these with contemporary systems theory and deep ecology.

Stephanie Kaza, a prominent contributor in contemporary ecodharma and close collaborator with Joanna Macy, edited the tribute volume, A Wild Love for the World: Joanna Macy and the Work of Our Time. In this conversation between Stephanie and William Edelglass—BCBS Director of Studies and scholar of Buddhism and environmental humanities—we will honor and celebrate Joanna’s inspiring life and trace the key ideas in her lifelong engaged Buddhist work.
